I’m Meggan
An Australian artist of many mediums, mainly textile these days. I’m a Beanieologist- a maker of Beanies (warm wooly hats),using both Crochet and Needle-felting.
I regularly source my yarns from my local Opportunity Shops (Thrift shops) being inspired by the colourful yarn available that day. Needlefelting beanies, and other wearable art pieces that are worked onto old woollen blankets.
My creations are inspired by the natural environment around me, the vibrant colours of my sub-tropical home. I paint the landscapes with fibre and wool.
I also Sculpt using wool, and my most recent work of art has two sculpted faces mounted on upcycled foam packaging, with Needle-felted paintings from old archival photos surrounding them. (See photos)
I have been involved with the Alice Springs Beaniefest since 2003, winning awards in the annual competition. Sadly this year 2026 is the 30th Anniversary and Finale.
These forms of textile art have enabled me to continue to be creative whilst I have endured ME/CFS and as I learn how to manage it somewhat. The Beaniefest comp always gave me great incentive each year.
Now I shall have the time to really concentrate on an even bigger Needle-felted Sculpture – a 3D Topographical Map of the Mt Warning Caldera where I live, in the Northern Rivers, NSW on the border with Queensland.
