Swiss Fiber Art (formerly The Swiss Hand Embroiderers‘ Guild) is a not-for-profit organization focusing on textile techniques. Switzerland used to have a lustrous textile industry up until a few decades ago. But unlike other countries like the UK where textile handicrafts are highly respected and even sponsored by the government, they seem to be somewhat forgotten here in Switzerland. The tradition of wearing ethnic clothing and of girls making their handmade textile “Aussteuer” (textile dowry) themselves have died out. That is okay in view of freedom of expression, equality and feminism, but it is a pity regarding the traditional textile knowledge that once was handed down from one generation to another…
Swiss Fiber Art initiates and curates fiber art projects in different formats. The main goal is to bring fiber arts back into the spotlight in Switzerland and to offer contemporary fiber artists an opportunity to show their works (sometimes along other media fine art works) in galleries.
