Finding all the colors of the rainbow from natural sources; flowers, leaves, bark, roots, and bugs has been a fascinating and fulfilling journey that continues. As a lifelong stitcher and fiber fanatic, learning to bring the colors of the rainbow on plain fiber using natural dyes with stitched and other shibori (squeeze) techniques to make patterns along with wood-block printing with inks made from the dyes brings about endless possibilities for design. Focused primarily on functional items, but also getting creative with more sustainable, eco-conscious clothing with low-waste in mind.
Living in south-central Wisconsin along the edge of the last glacier and always amazed at the geological smorgasbord it left behind influences my work to reflect what nature has provided. I’m also struck by the wide range of cultures that have been involved with natural dyes and their use. I love being part of a larger community of natural dyers who see their work as a promise to continue working with the importance of sound ecology and sustainability as a focus of our art.
